Common options in the trade
The options below are examples of what is common in the Indian bulk rice trade. They are not a list of SONIK’s standard packs; what your order uses is agreed and confirmed for that order.

Smaller bags cost more per tonne in material and filling time; larger bags are cheaper to move but need handling at the other end. If your customer resells in the same bag, their market decides the size. Jute is common in government supply because the Jute Packaging Materials (Compulsory Use in Packing Commodities) Act, 1987 lets the Government reserve a share of foodgrain packing for jute; the reservation is fixed each jute year, and procuring agencies set their own bag specifications.
What SONIK confirms for each order
Rice is packed according to the requirement confirmed with the buyer, and packing and marking are checked against that requirement before dispatch. Depending on the order, the rice can go into:
- SONIK-marked bags, like the bags in the mill store shown above;
- plain bags, for buyers who apply their own marking or sell into channels that do not need it; or
- bags printed with the buyer’s own approved artwork for private label.

Printing, marking and legal declarations
For private label, bag artwork, brand names, weights and any label claims are supplied and approved by the buyer. SONIK does not create brand names or label claims on a buyer’s behalf. The marking on the bag is the brand owner’s responsibility in the market where it is sold.
Food packs sold in India carry declarations under the Food Safety and Standards (Labelling and Display) Regulations, 2020 and the Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules, 2011. A retail pack needs the full set, such as the name of the food, net quantity, brand owner’s name and address, FSSAI logo and licence number, lot number and date marking. For non-retail containers, regulation 10 of the FSSAI labelling regulations allows a shorter list on the container itself, together with the words “NOT FOR RETAIL SALE”.
Which rules apply depends on the pack type and the sales channel, and both sets of rules have been amended over time. Check the current text, or ask your adviser, before you approve artwork. For export, the importing country’s labelling rules apply.
How artwork approval works
For printed bags, the usual sequence is:
- You send print-ready artwork with the bag size, material and quantity of bags.
- A proof is prepared from your artwork for checking.
- You approve the proof in writing, including text, weights, claims and any codes.
- Bags are produced and delivered to the mill.
- Packing is scheduled once the bags are in hand, and marking is checked against the confirmed order.
Lead time is the part people miss
Rice cannot be packed into printed or laminated bags until those bags exist. Lead time depends on the printing method, the number of bags, how many proof rounds are needed and the bag supplier’s schedule, so ask for the current timeline when terms are agreed. Sending the print file late is the most common reason a confirmed order sits waiting. Plain bags remove most of that wait.
Packing for export
- Marks and numbers on the bags, the bag count and the weights must match the invoice, packing list and certificates.
- Some destinations require fumigation and phytosanitary certification of the packed lot, which has to be timed with loading.
- Tell us the delivery basis and port, because stuffing and handing over the cargo follow from them.
